Tocqueville Society Conversation: Strengthening Workforce & Financial Stability
The Tocqueville Society is a network of more than 275 households across Dane County working together to create transformative, positive change in our community. Through gifts of $10,000 or more annually, Tocqueville Society members invest in making Dane County a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. A few times a year, we gather to learn and connect as a community.
Most recently on June 18, Tocqueville Society members and guests gathered at M3 Insurance to discuss the evolving landscape for working individuals and families in Dane County. The conversation focused on the widening gap between wages and the cost of living and how United Way of Dane County is working with community partners to improve affordability and financial stability.
Opening remarks from M3 President & Partner Sean LaBorde and United Way President & CEO Renee Moe highlighted wage trends, market costs and United Way’s role as a community convener and mobilizer. Moderated by Campaign Chair Jeff Tubbs of Findorff, the panel featured local leaders in workforce development and financial security.
Panelists emphasized that many residents struggle despite being employed, pointing to underemployment, unstable hours, limited benefits and wages that lag behind rising costs—particularly for caregiving roles. With about 30% of Wisconsin workers earning $20 per hour or less, the need for stronger career pathways is clear.
Speakers underscored the importance of coordinated, community-wide efforts like United Way’s Workforce Mobilization Plan and Financial Security strategies, and targeted workforce investments to reduce barriers and create more stable, family-supporting employment opportunities.
