Changing lives, one book at a time.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library started in 1995 to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could ensure that all children would have books, regardless of their family’s income.
United Way of Dane County is excited to bring the Imagination Library Initiative to Dane County. Increasing access to books, by building up families’ libraries at home for children to choose what they read, supports our Born Learning Initiative and the priority of ensuring that “all children are cared for and have fun as they become prepared for school.”
A special thank you to a generous anonymous donor who provided the financial contribution to launch this program in Dane County and provide books FREE to our community’s families.
How it Works
- All participating children receive a FREE age-appropriate BOOK through the mail each month, from birth to age five.
- All children under the age of five residing in Dane County are eligible to participate.
- The first book will take about 90 days to arrive at your home.
- Please remember to notify United Way of Dane County anytime your address changes in order to continue receiving books.
