The community came together April 30th at the Madison Concourse Hotel for the 29th Annual Community Volunteer Awards. There were over 500 attendees including over 100 volunteers celebrated at the event. Nolan Brown from Springs Window Fashions, along with 27 News Anchors Amber Noggle and George Smith hosted the event.

Many awards were given out including:

  • 4 Distinguished Service Awards
  • 2 Community Volunteer Awards
  • 2 Youth Awards
  • Nonprofit Award
  • Community Volunteer Business Award presented by BVN Chair Chris Smithka
  • Mike McKinney Award

This year featured the Kathy Martinson Youth Award, named after Kathy Martinson who supported BVN for a number of years. The recipient of that award was Kimberly Leon Teran from Middleton High School. She helped lead Latinos Unidos, a student organization meant to eliminate stereotypes, celebrate and promote Latino culture, combat racism and to have a voice.

The Community Volunteer Business Award went to Bank of Sun Prairie. They were there for their community when they needed them most in the aftermath of the tragic explosion in Sun Prairie last summer.

United Way also introduced their Volunteer Engagement Mobilization Plan. A panel of experts shared the impact volunteering has on the community and outlined how the plan will support community and corporate volunteerism.

This year the event was free of cost for attendees thanks to the many sponsors. It truly was inspiring listening to so many share why they volunteer and continue to give back to the community. For a list of winners and to find more about the event visit United Way’s website.
