Student United Way hosts Red, White and Read event

On April 22, teens, high school and college students will join together to share the importance of early childhood education and literacy at Red, White & Read. United Way of Dane County, UW-Student United Way, and Student Athletes Equally Supporting Others are coming together from 2:00-4:00pm at the Madison Public Library- Sequoya Branch located at 4340 Tokay Blvd to show local kids that reading is fun!

Everyone is invited to join Bucky Badger and other UW-Madison Athletes for an engaging day of reading. Additional activities at the library will include opportunities for parents, caregivers, and children to learn through play at Play and Learn, circle time and lots of interactive reading stations. This event is free and open to the public. These youth join millions of other young people around the world who are creating community change as part of Global Youth Service Day, the world’s largest and longest-running service event.

Bluegrass Concert to Benefit United Way

SpareTime Bluegrass, The Cork ‘n Bottle String Band, The Oak Street Ramblers, and Dave Landau—performer of children’s music will present a benefit concert for United Way of Dane County on Sunday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. at The Barrymore Theatre, 2090 Atwood Avenue, Madison WI.  All of the performers are contributing their time and talent, and all proceeds will go to support United Way to advance the community’s Agenda for Change goals.

This is the 11th annual concert, and has seen strong support in the past by serious bluegrass fans.  Admission for this family-friendly concert will be $10 for adults, and $5.00 for children 5-12 years of age ($20 maximum per family).  Tickets may will be available at the door.

Spare Time Bluegrass has been playing locally and throughout the state for over 15 years and has been a featured attraction at the Wisconsin State Fair.  The Oak Street Ramblers play regularly at the Malt House, East Washington Ave. at Milwaukee St.  The Cork ‘n Bottle String Band has played for a number of years at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union.

Dave Kinney, a United Way Loaned Executive from Oscar Mayer/Kraft Foods has organized this concert for the past 11 years. “This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy great music in a family-friendly atmosphere and help the community too,” says Kinney. “Thanks to everyone who supports this event.”
